1996 AGM Report: Republished from the Fall 1996 Quill America newsletter
"A total of 45 people from all over the United States and Canada came to the Harley Hotel in Enfield, CT on June 8, 1996 to attend the third Annual General Meeting of North American Quillers. After introductions, Jinny Alexander gave a presentation on the history of paper and paper making. Bill Latona, my brother in law and a representative from the SBA, explained how the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) can help those who are interested in starting a small business to market their work. (I have included a list of SBDC locations for all of the states in case you would like to contact them they do have a handout on "Selling products on Consignment" (Number 4 007 and one on "Handcrafts" which includes a bibliography on some of the business aspects of selling your work). The presentations were followed by a lively question and answer period.
Most of the quillers who attended brought samples of their work to display. Alson on display was the "Quill America" photo album and the travelling exhibit. (For those of you who are not familiar with the exhibit, it contains the work of 22 different American and Canadian quillers, and travels around the USA to acquaint the public with this wonderful art form). Quillers spent the remainder of the day making new friends, demonstrating their techniques and learning from each other. The atmosphere was warm, friendly, caring and sharing. More than one quiller commented on how quillers are so willing to share their ideas with each others, all were willing to have their work photographed.
Here are just a couple of the comments I received:
'I personally was thrilled to speak for the first time in the 20 odd years of doing quilling to others who knew what I was speaking of! The beautiful work & successful businesses have inspired me & "recharged" my batteries.' (Barb Machado, Massachusetts)
'I wanted you to know I had a great time. The quilling has left me inspired' (Deb Peppel, Minnesota)
'Jack and I enjoyed seeing all the beautiful quilling, and meeting the quillers and spouses' (Joan Liuru, Canada)
'The weekend was perfect' (Malinda Johnston, Missouri)
